Hendrik Herman Backer is called the godfather of Dutch comics. In 1922, he became one of the first to be actually employed as a comic artist by a journal, when he began his employment at the Rotterdamsch Nieuwsblad.

He worked at this newspaper for forty years, creating several different comics, starting with 'Yoebje en Achmed'. In addition, he began 'Uit het Dagboek van Hansje Teddybeer' in the competing daily Voorwaarts. Backer eventually became a staff artist at the Rotterdamsch Nieuwsblad in 1923.

His third strip, 'De Wonderlijke Geschiedenis van Tripje' (later renamed 'Tripje en Liezebertha') made Backer famous. When this comic appeared in book form for the first time, it was already so popular that the police had to keep order among the enthusiastic crowds.

The strip ran from 1923 until 1946, with a short break in 1942, when Backer refused to use his characters as propaganda for the Germans. Backer continued to work for the Nieuwsblad until his retirement in 1963, creating over 70 different comics. His other creations include 'Adolphus', 'De Lotgevallen van Ploetje en Moppie', 'Clowntje Rick', 'Limpo, het Schaduwmannetje', 'De Reis van Koen en Linnie', 'Babito, De Kleine Fluitspeler', 'Tobias', 'Boeboema op reis', 'Abdoel en zijn tovertapijt', etc.

Limpo, by Henk Backer

Henk Backer used many pseudonyms for his numerous activities as a writer of short stories, novels, radio plays, detective stories and poems, including Hans Overbeeke, Peter van Ingen, B. Elzebub, Ar Colijn, Johan Berndt and Bac. As "Vindex" he wrote popular (and at the time illegal) anti-war poetry. Backer retired in 1963.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.

If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
