Funky Winkerbean (1977)

Tom Batiuk was a high school teacher before he started his celebrated comic strip 'Funky Winkerbean' in 1972. The comic started out as a look at everyday high school life. Throughout the years, Batiuk's comic matured into a series of real-life stories.

Batiuk started using sensitive social issues as alcholism, suicide, teen-dating, abuse and cancer in the series, which made him a groundbreaking artist in the genre. This earned him several awards. King Features distributes 'Funky Winkerbean' to about 400 newspapers worldwide. A spin-off strip starring side-character and talkshow host 'John Darling' was launched in 1979, scripted by Batiuk and drawn by Tom Armstrong (until 1985) and then Gerry Shamray.

Series and books by Tom Batiuk in stock in the Lambiek Webshop:

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.

If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
