Tom Beland was born in Chicago, and grew up in Napa Valley, California. His father was a cartoonist in his spare time, and this inspired Tom Beland to become one himself. A self-taught comic artist, he is influenced by Al Hirschfeld, Charles Schulz, John Romita Sr., Gil Kane and others. He became a page designer and editorial artist at the Napa Valley Register and later the Vallejo Times-Herald. He drew autobiographical comics, which became very popular especially when he drew about his romance with Lily García, who he met at a theme-park and eventually married. Tom Beland married her and now lives on the island of San juan, Puerto Rico. His comics have been collected in 'True Story, Swear to God', which was published in 2003.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over
12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
