Don Bethman started out as a freelance graphic artist living in Delaware. After he graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University, he became increasingly disappointed with doing work for others, and decided to create his own comics. He found a way to combine his comic art with his love of cinema. He was fascinated with the actor Eli Wallach (from 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly', among other movies). He got in contact with the actor, and created a comic series that was presented as movies on paper, with Eli Wallach in the leading role. In 1998 Bethman founded Grey Blossom Sequentials, the name under which he self-published 'Paper Cinema'. In October of 1998, it received the Xeric Foundation award.
