In the early eighties, René Birkholm attended the School of Arts and Crafts, where he began to draw comics. His first album, 'Mental Proces', was crafted in a "Métal Hurlant style". After doing some advertising work, he started his fantasy/science-fiction series 'Chili' at Ultima.
