Rex Keene, by Harry Bishop

Harry Bishop was born in Painswick, Gloucestershire, and attended the Gloucester School of Art until 1937. During World War II, he served in the R.A.F. and by 1947, he reassumed his art studies at Wimbledon College of Art. He became art teacher at Mitcham Grammar School in Surrey in 1952.

He additionally drew for the Amalgamated Press. His work includes 'Cal McCord' in Comic Cuts, 'Jesse James' in Thriller Picture Library, and 'Buck Jones and Grandpa's Old Mine' in Cowboy Picture Library'. For Swift magazine, he drew the front page strip 'Tarna the Jungle Boy' between 1954 and 1963. He made the comic adaptation of 'Wyatt Earp' for Junior Express Weekly (Beaverbrook Newspapers) and the western 'Rex Keen' for Express.

He became fulltime artist in 1956 and wrote and illustrated the comic adaptation of the television western, called 'Gun Law' for the Daily Mirror from 1956 until the late 1970s. From 1967, Harry Bishop was also the first artist on perhaps the first original British continuing 'Tarzan' series, that appeared in the City's supplement TV Tornado. His final comic was the 'Wes Slade' newspaper strip, which ran in the Sunday Express from 1982. In the mid-1980s he had to give up drawing due to an eye infection.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
