Magic Cigar, by Brent Boates (from Fog City)

Brent Boates was a notable artist of English-Canadian underground comix in the 1970s. Born in Vancouver, Boates worked at the Georgia Straight in Vancouver, a weekly underground tabloid where he met the influential cartoonist Rand Holmes. He contributed to Fog City Comix and All Canadian Beaver Comix in Canada and among other titles, Forbidden Knowledge Comix in the USA. In the 1980s, he moved to Los Angeles and worked there in the film industry as an illustrator and visual effects art director. He has cooperated on such films as 'Masters of the Universe', 'The Hunt for Red October', 'Batman Returns', 'Cliffhanger', 'Die Hard' and 'True Lies'. He was nominated for an Oscar in the visual effects category for the movie 'Die Hard'. In the mid-1990s, he moved back to Vancouver with his family.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
