Humorous artist José Castillo was born in the old Spanish protectorate of Morocco in 1922; then he moved to Valencia. He primarily worked for publishing house Valenciana, which he did for decades since its beginning in the 1940s. The abundant comics and gag cartoons he did for the publisher mainly appeared in Jaimito, Selecciones de Jaimito and Pumby. For Jaimito Castillo created 'El Paracaidista Pérez' in 1957 and 'Johnny Culata' in 1962, among other series. For Pumby he created series like 'Biela' and 'Los Tres Mosquiteros y Medio' in the 1960s. He also worked for publishers other than Valenciana such as Maga and for newspapers like Arriba and Faro de Vigo.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over
12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop.
However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
