James Childress had been active as a cartoonist since 1954, when he drew for a local weekly from the age of 13. Childress was the artist of the 'Conchy' newspaper strip that ran from 1970 to 1977, when the artist killed himself. 'Conchy', a daily and sometimes Sunday strip about an island, was mainly self-syndicated, but also distributed by Publisher's Hall Syndicate and Field Newspapers. A couple of book collections have appeared. |
