Katholieke Illustratie, 1919

Joan Collette was a Dutch graphic artist, designer, illustrator, (glass) painter and mosaic artist. Born in Delft, he studied to become a drawing teacher in Amsterdam, while also attending the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He was a pupil of Jan Toorop, and worked as an artist of jokes and occasional comic pages for Katholieke Illustratie in the late 1910s. Between 1922 and 1927 he was part of the artist group Cuypers in Roermond, where he specialized in landscapes, portraits and city views. He was the teacher of among others Bouwman, Marinus Schans and Maudy van der Verheijen.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
