Korky the Cat by James Crighton
Korky the Cat from 7 November 1959

James "Jimmy" Crighton was a British comic book artist for DC Thomson, best known for creating The Dandy's 'Korky the Cat'. Born in Dundee, where he also studied at Morgan Academy, he began his career as an apprentice with a firm of architects. By 1913 he joined John Leng's Dundee-based publishing firm of newspapers and magazines.

During World War I, he was with the Royal Engineers and the King's Liverpool's, and was stationed at the Somme and in Ypres. Back in civil life, he returned to John Leng and created his first comics characters, 'Billy and Bunny', for The Dundee Advertiser in 1919, and for Fairyland Tales from 1925.

In 1937 Crighton moved over to the offices of D.C. Thomson, who had a controlling interest in John Leng's publishing activities since 1926. Crighton's 'Korky the Cat' debuted in the first issue of The Dandy of December 1937. He continued to draw the feature for the comic book's front cover until his death in 1962, after which he was succeeded by Charles Grigg.

In addition to The Dandy, Jimmy Crighton also drew covers for the Dandy and Beano Annuals between 1943 and 1962. In the 1950s he was also present in The Wizard, The Evening Telegraph and The Topper.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.

If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
