Maurice Cuvillier started out working as an illustrator for Le Pêle-Mêle, L'Almanach Vermot, Les Petits Bonshommes, Parisiana and Le Dimanche Illustré during the late 1910's and throughout the 1920's. He did his first comics work for Lisette (1929), Guignol (1931), L'Épatant (1931-38) and Pierrot. He became best known for his children's comics, starting with 'Zimbo et Zimba', published by Editions Croisade des Enfants in 1937.

In the following year, he created 'Sylvain et Sylvette', a series about a brother and sister who get lost in a forest, published in Coeurs Vaillants and in a series of albums. Cuvillier created a complete cast of talking animals around the characters, which made the comic one of France's most popular animal series.

During the 1940s, he was also a present in Pat magazine (presumably reprints). In 1956 Maurice Cuvillier got ill and had to leave 'Sylvain et Sylvette' to Jean-Louis Pesch and Claude Dubois, and died a year later.

Series and books by Maurice Cuvillier in stock in the Lambiek Webshop:

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.

If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
