Ko Doncker was a Dutch illustrator, comic artist, writer and shadow-player. He was a class mate of Jan Feith, and attended the Kunstnijverheidschool in Haarlem. He was a contributor to the satirical magazine De Ware Jacob, De Groene Amsterdammer and Haarlems Dagblad, and author of books like 'De Avonturen van Dr. Mol' (1900).

He created the comic character 'Piet Pelle' for bicycle factory Gazelle in 1912. This character was used again in the 1950s by Gustaaf Boissevain and is known to this day. Another advertising comic by Doncker was 'De Reis van Mijnheer Haverstok' for the suitcase factory Verweegen & Kok (1912).

Doncker introduced the limerick in Holland and was one of the first artists that was successful with his shadow-plays. He died in 1917 at the age of 43, while riding his bike from Haarlem to his home in Zuid-Schalkwijk.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
