Uncle Joe

Fang Cheng, whose real name is Sun Shunchao, was born in Beijing. His ancestral home was in the Guangdong Province. He graduated from the Chemistry Department of Wuhan University in 1942 and worked at the Huanghai Chemical Institute for four years.
In 1946, he was employed as cartoonist by the Observer Bi-monthly in Shanghai. Two years later, he went to Hong-Kong to participate in activities of the Renjian Art Society. He was senior art editor of the People's Daily in Beijing since 1951. One of his recurring characters is 'Uncle Joe'. He held personal cartoon exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong-Kong and other cities.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
