Nimmerklug im Knirpsenland

Karl Fischer is a German children's book illustrator, who also drew comic strips for several DDR comic magazines. In 1937-40 he had an internship as a decorator at the Berliner Kaufhaus Union. He served in the German army during World War II, spent some time as a prisoner of war with the Sovjets, and began working as an editor in Berlin in 1948. He turned freelance in 1954 and became one of the best known children's book illustrators of the DDR, most notably for his work for publisher Verlag Neues Leben.

From the mid 1960s until the mid 1970s, he illustrated several comic stories for Der Trommel, including 'Das Mädchen vom Ehrenmal', 'Der Bissige Hund', '5 Minuten vor Mitternacht', 'Storm über Berlin', 'Die Tscheka Greift ein', 'Im Schatten des Grossen Adler', 'Bastien und der Spion' and 'Geraubte Schätze'. Other stories in the 1970s include 'Ataman Kolja' in NBI, and contributions to Soldatenpost.

In the 1980s he was present in Bummi with several stories in cooperation with Hans-Georg Brauns, such as 'Burattinos Abenteuer', 'Dr. Aibolit', 'Nimmerklug im Knirpsenland' and 'Juff und Oskar', and in Atze with stories like 'Kolumbus auf Entdeckungsfahrt' and 'Männer gegen Feuer'. He also drew propaganda comics for Frösi ('Nashörnchen', 'Glück auf!').
