Penko Gelev was born in Assenovgrad, Bulgaria in 1968. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, wher he graduated in 1987. He became an editor of several newspapers, as well as a freelance illustrator and comic artist. Some of the comics he drew are 'The Wizard of Oz', 'The Aksol's Song', 'Corporal Neck' (written by Sotir Gelev), 'The Damnation' (written by Stefan Bellov), 'Ozma of Oz' and 'Iliicho and August'. They were published in magazines like Duga, Riko and Venche.

Penko Gelev was also an actor and special effects designer for the movie 'The Witch's Castle'. He publishes the comics series 'Mowgli' and cooperates often with Sotir Gelev.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
