Bud Grace got his doctorate in physics in 1971 at the Florida State University. However, after working as a physicist for a while, Grace chose for a career in comics in 1979. He worked as a freelance cartoonist for some major magazines before starting his 'Ernie' comic in 1988, distributed by King Features.

In the USA, the strip was renamed to 'The Piranha Club' in 1998. It is especially popular in the Scandinavian countries Sweden and Norway, where it appears in a bi-monthly comic book called 'Ernie'. Grace also drew the 'Babs and Aldo' comic strip under the pseudonym Buddy Valentine.
