John Barton Gruelle was the creator of newspaper comic 'Mr. Twee Deedle', which replaced 'Little Nemo' by Winsor McCay in the New York Herald in 1914, where it ran until 1921. The son of a landscape artist, Johnny Gruelle became a newspaper cartoonist when he was still a teenager. |

He was well-known for his 'Raggedy Andy' children's books, and his many illustrations and stories for magazines. In 1929, Gruelle returned to newspaper comics with the Sunday strip 'Brutus', which ran until his death in 1938. |
