Robert D. Gustafson got his education at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. He began his career in the 1940s doing cartoons for the Bostonian Magazine and later King Features Syndicate. Between 1950 and 1959, he wrote and drew Russ Westover's 'Tillie the Toiler' strip, also for King Features. Afterwards, he wrote 'Joe Palooka' for McNaught for a couple of years. From 1959, he was the artist and writer on 'Beetle Bailey' comic books by Dell and Charlton. Also for Dell, he did art and script on 'Mister Magoo' and 'Freddy'. Since 1962, he was a writer on Mort Walker's staff, mainly on 'Hi and Lois' and 'Beetle Bailey'.
