Danny Hellman was born in 1964 in New York City. He became a self-taught artist, earning his living as an editorial illustrator, contributing artwork to a wide variety of publications, including Time and Screw magazine. Hellman also dabbles in the time-consuming and monetarily-unrewarding field of underground comix, and has contributed to many such projects, from the late 1980s to the present, including Last Gasp Comix & Stories, Paradox Press' Big Books Series, and others.

In August 2001, as the victim of a financially-devastating nuisance lawsuit, Hellman published the first in a series of comics anthology books to benefit his legal defense; 'Legal Action Comics Vol. 1', which features contributions from R. Crumb, Art Spiegelman, Kim Deitch, Tony Millionaire, and seventy other stars of the U.S. and Canadian underground comics world.
