Spirou & Fantasio - La Vallée des Bannis

Jean-Richard Geurts, better known as Janry, was born in Jadoville, in former Belgian Congo. He studied Industrial Design in Brussels for two years, before he became the assistant of Francis. He worked mainly on the 'Pichelsteiner' comics for the German Kauka Verlag. He then worked with Dupa, whom he assisted on 'Cubitus' and 'Chlorophylle'. During this period, he met Philippe Vandevelde (Tome), with whom he started a longtime collaboration. They assisted Turk and De Groot on 'Léonard', 'Robin Dubois' and 'Clifton', before they began their assocation wit Spirou magazine and its publisher Dupuis in 1979.

Jeuréka (1981)

Their first creation for the magazine was the game page 'Jeuréka' in 1980-81. In the following year, they took over the magazine's title comic 'Spirou et Fantasio' after Jean-Claude Fournier's departure from the series. At first alternating with Nic Broca and Raoul Cauvin on new stories, Janry and Tome eventually became the series sole artists. Their run on the series was very popular with the readers, since their work was strongly reminiscent of André Franquin's. At first, they collaborated on both scenario and artwork, but after a while, Janry became the artist while Tome focused on the scripts.

In 1998, Tome and Janry restyled the classic 'Spirou' comic for the new millennium, making the characters and the storyline more mature. However, this new version lasted for only one book, since they handed over the series to Munuera and Morvan in 2004. Tome and Janry, aided by their assistant Dan Verlinden and colorist Stéphane de Becker, have focused on new gags starring Spirou's mischievous and naughty junior version since.

In 2013 he started a new series with writer Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, starring the little chicken 'Poussin 1er', who is struggling with existential questions.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.

If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
