De Wraak van de Clown, by Jokal (Jan Karel Lankhorst)

Jan Karel Lankhorst was a Dutch teacher, who started making comics under the pseudonym Jokal. He began his artistic career in magazine Pep in the mid-1970s, doing illustrations. Prior to this, he had already done illustration work for school books. In the late 1970s, he devoted his comics career to western. 'Western Women', his first album, contained short western stories and appeared at the publishing house Panda in 1982. The second album in this series appeared at Blue Circle. He then joined the publishing house Arboris through a contest of the magazine Titanic. From 1989, he started the trilogy 'De Nachtmerrie van de Marionet' at this publisher. In 2000, he drew 'De Wraak van de Clown' in the collection 'Moord en Doodslag'. Two years later followed 'De Vlucht van de Reiger'.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
