Weird World Judy, by Ian Kennedy

Scottish artist Ian Kennedy is best known for his aviation comics. After college, Ian Kennedy became an apprentice at the art department of DC Thomson. He also took courses at the Dundee College of Art in 1949. He got his first job at Knockout, published by Amalgamated Press in London. His first published works were for the Collins Boys Annual and for Sun in 1954.

Kennedy did a lot of war comics during the 1950s and 1960s, including 'Thriller Picture Library' and 'Air Ace'. He began freelancing for DC Thomson in 1955, starting with 'Red Skull Branson'. His work appeared in a wide range of periodicals, including Hotspur, Buster ('Jeff Craig Detective') and Wizard ('Tiger McTaggart'). For the latter, he did the racing car story 'Typhoon Tennyson'.

In the 1970s, Kennedy began to concentrate more on Science Fiction with regular work for 2000AD and Star Lord. In the 1980s, he was very busy working for 2000AD, Battle, Buddy, Blake's 7, Eagle ('Dan Dare'), Mask, Victor Summer Special, Wildcat and DC Thomson's pocket books. In addition, he contributed to the Scandinavian 'Phantom' comic. He went into semi-retirement after doing 'Bombs on Target 1997' in Commando.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
