Hanns Erich Köhler started working as a caricaturist for Der Volksdeutsche in the late 1930s, and worked with E. O. Plauen for the weekly magazine Das Reich. Under the penname Erik and with text writer Walter Pogge, he made the comic strip 'Tipp und Tapp', about the evacuation of the Volhynian Germans. Between 1941 and 1944 he also contributed to Simplicissimus, also using the penname Erik. After 1945, he became one of the best known BRD caricaturists, together with Loriot and Walter Henkel. For many years, he worked for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Munich edition of Simplicissimus.
