Johannes Franciscus Nuijens, who used the pseudonym Korporaal Achilles, was a catholic drawing teacher. He was one of the pioneers in Dutch comics, who made a number of albums containing satirical picture stories. In 1890, his 'Het Rapport der Defensiecommissie' was published, a satirical comment on the new army law. Three years later, in 'Klacht van een Onderwijzer', he depicted the struggles of teachers having to do a new exam. In 'De Toekomststaat' (1891) he reflected on the future implications of a state run by socialist Domela Nieuwenhuis (whom he called Nieuwela Domenhuis). Probably his most impressive comic work is 'Aanleiding tot den Engelsch-Transvaalschen Oorlog', published in 1900, in which he criticized the Boer War.

Series en boeken door Korporaal Achilles op voorraad in de Lambiek Webshop:

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.

If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
