Journey into Mystery by Sam Kweskin
Journey Into Mystery 10 (Jul 1953)

Sam Kweskin had brief career in comics, and was almost wholly spent at Marvel. He began drawing (and occasionally writing) for the company in 1952, back when it was called Atlas. His work appeared in books like Adventures Into Terror and Wild Western until the amount of available work declined around 1957. Afterwards, Kweskin built a solid career in advertising art and storyboarding for commercials, returning to comics only for one short story - a war back-up for the 1967 'Tod Holton, Super Green Beret'. Around 1972, he did a small amount of work for Marvel again - some of it under the pen name, "Irv Wesley". He contributed to 'Daredevil', 'Dr. Strange' and 'Sub-Mariner'.

Sub-Mariner, by Sam Kweskin

On Sub-Mariner, he worked with the strip's creator, Bill Everett, who was then having health problems. Kweskin was being groomed to take over the book but it was cancelled, and Marvel's editors were not impressed enough with the work he was then doing to offer him more. Kweskin returned full-time to advertising work and also dabbled in illustration work, most of it involving old airplanes and war scenes.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.

If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
