Balthasar Lippisch was a German illustrator, caricaturist and watercolor artist, born in Jamlitz in 1920. Raised in Berlin, he had to fight in the War right after his school period. He was eventually a prisoner in a French prison in Algeria, and during this period he killed the time by making portraits of his guards. After the War, he got a proper artistic education at the Munich Academy. He went to work as a caricaturist and illustrator for several German and Italian publishers, but also for commercial clients.
In 1971 he took up watercolor painting, specializing in children's and circus scenes, cheerful scenes from rural everyday life and landscape impressions. In that same year, he illustrated the comic book starring 'Pip & Zip' from a text by the Dutch author Ciny Macrander for De Geïllustreerde Pers. The characters were based on the television series of the same name written by Wim Meuldijk.
