Les Deux Barbus by Harold
Les Aventures des deux barbus (from La Nouvelle République)

Above strip appeared in French paper La Nouvelle République between 1950 and 1953. It is signed Harold and came from the Toonder Studios in Holland. It is well possible that the artist behind this signature is Harold Mack, a British animator who headed Marten Toonder's animation studios together with his wife Pamela in the 1950's.

Harold Mack was born in London and studied art in Harrow Polytechnic. He got his first jobs with the Gordon Lawrence and Lord & Thomas advertising agencies before turning to animation. He worked with studios like Halas & Bachelor, Gaumont British Animation, British Animated Pictures and Julius Pinschewer.

Harold and Pamela Mack came to Holland in 1949 to help build up the animation department of the Toonder Studios in Amsterdam. The pair cooperated on several films, starting with 'Plucky Panda's penny' (1949) and 'Tom Puss and the Loch Ness Monster' (1950), as well as commercials for the British and German television. In the early years, Mack also briefly cooperated on the 'Panda' newspaper strip.

Later came six 'Hugo' shorts for the British market, and the more philosophical and experimental films 'The Golden Fish' (1951) and 'Moonglow' (1954). The department was joined by the Danish animators Børge Ring, Bjørn Frank Jensen and Per Lygum.

The Macks left Toonder in 1958 and set up their own Anglo Dutch Group in Aalsmeer in The Netherlands. Their work consisted of mainly commercials, but also political cartoons for the Ed Murrow Show. Harold Mack was a teacher for Dutch animators like Bill Karstens, Rupert van der Linden and Ronald Raaymakers.

Harold Mack died on 24 December 1975.
