Alvaro Mairani began his career shortly after World War II, contributing to the periodicals Tiger and Avventure of the publisher Giovanni De Leo. Starting in 1949, he worked for Universo, where he took over 'Il Principe Azzurro' and launched 'Il Cavaliere Ideale' in L'Intrepido. He has illustrated nearly all the covers for the Albi dell'Intrepido collection from issue 253 onwards. For Salgari magazine, he made 'Red Bill contro l'Atomica'. He used the pseudonym Almay for his work outside of Universo. He did cover illustrations for Poker, and eventually left the comics field to work exclusively as a painter.
