Doug Marlette was born in Greensboro, North Carolina and grew up in Mississippi and Florida. He studied at Florida State University, and started working as a political cartoonist in 1972. The witty, biting style of his cartoons and his comic 'Kudzu' caught on and got syndicated to newspapers worldwide. He has worked for newspapers like The Charlotte Observer (1972-1987), The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (1987-1989), New York Newsday (1989-2002), The Tallahassee Democrat (2002-2006) and Tulsa World (2006-2007). Marlette died in a car accident in July 2007.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over
12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
