Manuel Alejandro Martinez Parma created the comic strip 'Cosas de Negros' for the daily La Razón in 1935. One of the characters of the comic, the little negro 'Alelí, became Martinez Parma's best-known creation and appeared in the scholastic magazine Figuritas since 1938. Martinez Parma was one of the main contributors to Figuritas, together with Carlos Clémen. Since the start in 1936, he illustrated a great many covers, and illustrations based on the theme of the magazine. Besides 'Alelí', he created a new comic for the magazine, called featuring the character 'Cristian'. Martinez Parma has additionally made many illustrations for the book in the collection 'Robin Hood'. Other magazines that Martinez Parma was associated with were Billiken, La Obra and Anteojito.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
