Comic story by Ary Murnu

Ary Murnu was a Romanian caricaturist, picture story artist and stamp designer during the first half of the 20th century. He was born Arytomene Gheorghiadis Murnu in Greece into a family of Macedonean-Romanian origins. Both he and his brother, writer and translator George Murnu, began their careers upon their arrival in Romania in 1905 with contributions to the anti-monarchy magazine Furnica.

Murnu was an illustrator with the weekly children's magazine Lumea Copiilar between 1922 and 1925. During this period he also made picture stories with a moralistic tone. He designed five series of postcards with Carol II for the Romanian Postal Services from 1930 to 1934.

He returned to the comics genre in 1936 with stories like 'Nică, Tică şi Lică' and 'Păcală şi Tândală' for Lumina Copiilor. When the magazine folded in 1938, Murnu turned to painting and book illustration. He has illustrated many books that were either written or published by his brother. He designed new sets of postcards between 1943 and 1949, that are highly praised among Romanian stamp collectors. Ary Murnu retired in 1949 and passed away in Bucharest in 1971.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.

If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
