Willem van Nieuwenhoven was born in Laren as the son of painter Willem van Nieuwenhoven Sr. (1851-1927). In the early 1930s, he attended the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam (the future Rietveld Academy). During this period he also took his first illustration assignments. He did fashion illustrations for newspapers, illustrations for children's book and the designs for advertising brochures.

He illustrated several works by A. D. Hildebrand (a.o. the (sticker) picture book 'De Zilveren Spiegel' in 1941, 'Het Vrouwtje van Stavoren' in 1943 and 'Ali Baba en de Veertig Rovers'). He was a fan of sailing, and did the illustrations for De Waterkampioen. He is best known for his use of the scaperboard technique.
