Cartoon from 11/8/1962, by Opland

Opland, pseudonym of Amsterdam artist Rob Wout, was one of Holland's most famous political cartoonists of the second half of the twentieth century. He studied political science at the University of Amsterdam and did his first cartoons for De Groene Amsterdammer in 1947, and subsequently contributed to Het Parool and Vrij Nederland.

However, he broke off his studies, assumed the pseudonym Opland, and began working fulltime as an artist/cartoonist. He made his first political cartoons for De Volkskrant in 1948 and continued to produce these for this paper for a period of 53 years. He also remained affiliated to De Groene Amsterdammer with a weekly cartoon until his death in 2001. He also made an occasional comic strip, such as 'De Wonderlijke Avonturen van Anna' in De Volkskrant in 1979-1980.

Opland's recognizable style, which he developed without formal training, is characterized by thick lines and the characteristic, schematic heads of the politicians he ridiculed. The high point of Opland's career was in the 1970s and 1980s, during the days of Dutch politicians Van Agt, Luns, Wiegel and Den Uyl, and America's president Nixon.

He gained international fame with his cartoon about nuclear weapons, that became the mascot of the demonstrations in Amsterdam and The Hague against the installation of nuclear missiles in the Netherlands. Opland was highly respected by his colleagues and even by politicians, which often annoyed him.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.

If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
