Hel by Danker Jan Oreel

Danker Jan Oreel was born in Breda, where he also attended the St. Joost Art Academy. He began his career working at the illustration department of a publishing house, making among others (advertising) illustrations for Black & Decker, Chrompack and the Dutch educational television. He became a freelance artist in 1990. Besides many advertising and magazine illustrations, Oreel has also illustrated comics, like a comic about The Rolling Stones and the comic book 'Big Deal!' (1987).

Living in Zeeland, he wrote and illustrated two comic books about the city of Goes. He also chronicled the history of this province with historian Jan Zwemer, in a comic called 'Zeeland, van Nehalennia tot Westerscheldetunnel'. In 2000 he developed 'De Noepies' for a sticker album in commission of the Coƶperatie Fruitmasters Groep. In 2005 he illustrated the 'Suske en Wiske' book 'De Lallende Libel', which was distributed freely among families in the west of Noord-Brabant and the province of Antwerp. In 2010 he is present in comic magazine Eppo with 'Hel', a comic written by Henk Kuijpers.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
