Self-taught artist René Pétillon made illustrations for magazines like Planète, Plexus, L'Enragé, Week-End, Vingt Ans and Penthouse before he began a collaboration with the magazine Pilote in 1972. From then on, Pétillon devoted himself completely to comics and produced a series of strips with 'Docteur Miracle'. In 1974, he created his series about detective 'Jack Palmer'. This became his most important character. 'Jack Palmer' was published in several magazines, including l'Echo des Savanes and Pilote.

In addition to this detective story, Pétillon drew 'Le Chien des Basketville' in L'Écho des Savanes and created science-fiction stories for Métal Hurlant and Pilote. Several of his short stories were collected in albums like 'Les Carottes sont Cuites' (Humanoïdes Associés, 1980) and 'Les Aventures de Douglas Ferbanc et Vaseline' (Dargaud, 1982). Petillon also worked for Fluide Glacial (since 1975), À Suivre (since 1978) and Chic (since 1984).

For L'Echo des Savanes he wrote the scripts for 'Le Baron Noir', a comic drawn by Yves Got. As a scriptwriter, he has also worked with Jean-Marc Rochette ('Panique à Londres', 'Scandale à New York') and Florence Cestac ('Super Catho'). He was present with V.S.D. and has drawn 'Les Animous' in Le Point. René Pétillon is mostly known nowadays as an editorial cartoonist in the satirical weekly Le Canard Enchaîné.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
