comic art by Gigi Piras

Gigi Piras entered the comics field in 1984 after meeting Gabriele Anthelmi and Dario Maiore. He got his degree in commercial art and took courses in comics at the D.A.M.S. in Bologna. During his studies, he met fellow artists Roberto Raviola, Igort, Marcello Iori as well as Linus editor Paula Temelin. He settled in Rome and made his debut in the magazine Zut in 1988. A year later, he began a collaboration with the newspaper Il Manifesto and the weekly Avvenimenti, and drew a short in a 1940s style in L'Eternauta. He contributed to Tiramolla and eventually began a collaboration with the Italian Disney publisher Mondadori. He drew several one pagers in Disney Megazine and some longer 'Mickey Mouse' stories in Topolino. In addition, he works as an editor, artist and writer for Boxer, as well as Cuore.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.

If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
