Pom, whose real name is Jozef van Hove, was part of the second generation of Flemish newspaper comic artists, just like Jef Nys and Bob Mau. In his career, he produced just one series, called 'Piet Pienter and Bert Bibber'. Pom made it a success, but only in Flanders. He draws his influences from Hergé and Tillieux, and combines it with his own characteristic humor.

Born in Berchem, Van Hove studied to become a radio technician in Germany during World War II. Because of he had worked in Germany, he had difficulty finding a job after the War, which resulted in him becoming a comic artist. He started his career with Het Handelsblad in 1950. From October of that year, he gave his satirical view on current affairs in his comic 'De Week in Krabbels' in this newspaper.

The first 'Piet Pienter' story commenced publication on 16 April 1951. He drew nine stories for Het Handelsblad, before he moved over to Het Gazet van Antwerpen in 1955. The paper's publisher, De Vlijt, also collected the comic in a book series. In the 1990s, Pom drew the final episodes of his series for the publishers Keesing and Standaard. After his retirement in 1995, Pom reworked some of his older stories for the Standaard reprints.

Pom, who claimed to have disliked drawing comics at all, has very rarely given interviews. However, several hommages to his work have been made, such as the 2010 album 'Boelie en Kroepie Boemboem' by Tom Bouden, that featured his characters. Bouden also oversaw a tribute comic book to Pom called 'Op het spoor van Pom', that contains contributions by 60 Flemish artists. Pom himself lived a reclusive life in the forests of Nijlen, where he spent all of his time on his hobby electrotechnology. He passed away on 2 May 2014, at the age of 94.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.

If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
