Watson Portela is a productive Brazilian comics artist, known for his work for Grafipar and Vecchi. His best known series are 'Paralela' and 'Vôo Livre'. He began his career drawing for fanzines, until he did his first (unpublished) professional assigment for Adolfo Aisen's Ebal publishers. Initially working a lot with advertising, he became a fulltime comics artist in 1979, when his collaboration with Spektro of the publishing house Vecchi began.

For Grafipar, he did a large amount of terror, horror, erotic, western and superhero stories. He was one of Brazil's most popular artists of the 1980s. He joined Abril, and did work on Trapalhões, Disney, He-Man and 'Jovem Radical'. More recently, he has been drawing for fanzines again, making erotic parodies and working on album projects for Opera Graphica.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
