Benoît Roels attended the Institute Saint-Luc in Brussels, where he graduated in 1988. He was employed by the publisher Lombard, where he started out making Jean-Louis Foncine novel adaptations with writer Jean-François di Giorgio for the collection Signe de Piste. During the same period, he illustrated a book called 'Les Vergnes de l'Ognon', and created stage set designs for Brussel's fantasy film festival. In 1993, he worked with writer Di Giorgio again to create the comic story 'Les Fous de Monk' in Hello Bédé.
In that same year, he worked for Dargaud on the series 'Oknam'. He did art and script for one album, but then left the scriptwriting to Pascal Renard. In 1996, Roels and Renard created 'Wooly Wan' for Lombard, which was cut short due to the death of the writere. In 1998, Roels began his own series, 'Bleu Lézard' in the Glénat collection Bulle Noire. In 2006 he teamed up with Jean-François Charles and Maryse to make a comic adaptation of Christian Jacq's 'Les Mystères d'Osiris'.
