Although Riad Sattouf was born in Paris, he spent most of his childhood the Middle East. Thanks to his grandmother, he was able to read French comics. He took on drawing from a young age, and when he decided to start a career in comics, he produced several short stories that remained unpublished. He then studied Applied Arts, followed by the École des Gobelins for a study in film animation. Sattouf's work was noted by Olivier Vatine in 1997 and he introduced him to publisher Guy Delcourt. His first professional comics work was in collaboration with writer Corbeyran. Together, they created the 'Petit Verglas' series. At the same time, Sattouf made cover drawings for novels and some animation projects for fun and study. The first album of Sattouf's second series, Les Pauvres Aventures de Jérémie', came out at Dargaud publishers in January 2003. For this series, Sattouf does both artwork and scenario.
