Maartje Schalkx is a Dutch born, London based comic artist. Born and raised in Utrecht, the Netherlands, she studied fine arts in Amsterdam and Glasgow as well as graphic design in London. In 2003 she moved away from the Netherlands and since then she has lived in Scotland, New York and currently London.
She has been making comics since 2005 and most stories are based on true events, whether that is her time working with adults with learning disabilities or witnessing a pigeon getting run over in the street. She is part of the Chicks on Comics collective and has been published Graffiti 76% and Whores of Mensa magazines, although she generally self-publishes her work, for instance as accordion-folding booklets. Some of the titles of her comics are 'Cowards/Carnivores', 'Maggie', 'Pigeon' and 'I always knew'.
