Eduard Thöny was an Austrian painter and artist, born in Brixen. He studied in Paris and was a contributor to the Münchner Humoristische Blätter and Der Jugend. He was an editor and artist of the satirical magazine Simplicissimus from 1896 to 1944. He was especially known for his cartoons on military, student and social life subjects.
Thöny was a successful artist during the national-socialist reign. He was appointed professor by Adolf Hitler in April 1938 and won the Goethe Medal for Art and Science in 1941. In the final phases of World War II, he was included in Goebbels and Hitler's "Gottbegnadeten" list of crucial artists to Nazi culture.
