Adrian Tomine was born in Sacramento, California. At the age of twelve, he discovered the comic 'Love and Rockets' by the Hernandez Brothers and was heavily influenced by their work. In 1991, while still in high school, he started writing and drawing fictional and autobiographical stories, which he published in his first mini-comic 'Optic Nerve'.

In addition to his more than ten issues of 'Optic Nerve', Drawn & Quarterly also published the book collections '32 Stories' (a collection of his mini-comics, 1995) and 'Sleepwalk and Other Stories' (1997), as well as his graphic novels 'Summer Blond' (2002) and 'Shortcommings' (2007).

Scenes from an impending marriage by Adrian Tomine
Scenes From an Impending Marriage

Adrian Tomine is a keen observer of the intricacies of human relationships. The characters that populate these stories may appear to be well-adjusted on the surface, but Tomine takes us deeper into their lives, subtly examining their struggle to connect with friends and lovers. He even chronicled the preparations of his own wedding to Sarah Brennan in his 2011 book 'Scenes From an Impending Marriage'. Tomine completed a degree in English Literature at The University of California at Berkeley, in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he still resides.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.

If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
