Silvya Millones, by Josep Toutain

Josep Toutain is one of the key figures in Spanish comics. Mainly known as the founder of the Selecciones Illustradas agency, he has helped many Spanish artists to get their turn in the international comics field. Toutain started as an illustrator himself in the late 1940s, drawing for several periodicals and dailies, like TBO and La Prensa. His most notable work of the time was 'El Héroe de Saipan', a exotic long story published in 1950. He then joined Francisco de La Fuente's Histograf agency, for which he drew the 'Sylvia Millones' series, as well as 'Un Chico de Arkansas'.

The Selecciones Illustradas agency was founded in 1954. Occupied by his editorial duties for this agency, he cancelled all his own comic activities two years later. The agency soon became one of the biggest international comic agencies, exporting comics to Europe, South America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and even the USA.

Toutain managed to get some of his artists a job at magazines like Eerie, Creepy and Vampirella. Some of the artists that worked for his agency are Jose Maria Bea, Luis Bermejo, Fernando Fernandez, Carlos Gimenez, Alfonso Font, Francisco Hidalgo, Manfred Sommer and Adolfo Usero. Toutain multiplied his activities and launched a variety of magazines and expanded his album's list. Josep Toutain remained active until the 1990s.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.

If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
