Witte Wartena was born in 1976 and lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Wartena studied art in Enschede, where he graduated in illustration in 1998. Seeing comics as the most versatile art medium, In 1997 Wartena and Sebastiaan Schlicher created the comic game 'Kassie Mik-Mak' holding the presentation at the comic store Prof Ich and games store Pion in Enschede. Wartena's work was also shown in several international art exhibitions, including in Stockholm, London, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and France. Some of his titles are 'Het Zwartegat', 'Het beste van Tekno', 'De Inboorling' and 'Retour' (text by Hans Kloos). This last comic was also made into animation.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over
12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
