Redrat by Johannes van de Weert

Johannes van de Weert was a cartoonist active in the Rotterdam punk and squatter's movements of the 1980s. He was a singer with the punkband De Rondos and he started self-publishing small comic booklets in the late 1970s. After the booklets 'Geis', 'Geis gaat op reis' and 'Hamer en Sikkelstrip' he created his character 'Redrat' for the fanzine Raket in 1980. The character soon became an icon for the squatter's movement and even the stories were even translated in German.
Van de Weert made his final 'Redrat' booklet in 1983, when the punk movement came to an end. He then focused on other comics, such as 'Uitverkoop' (1984) about the NSB and 'No Pasaran' (1986) about a Dutchman during the Spanish civil war. When De Rondos released a compilation box in 2009, Van de Weert made a new 'Red Rat' retrospect comic for the occasion, published by Papieren Tijger. Van de Weert now works as a fine artist in Amsterdam.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over 12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.

If you want to help us continue and improve our ever- expanding database, we would appreciate your donation through Paypal.
