Erik Wielaert grew up in the Netherlands in Amersfoort, Leiden and Assen, and now lives and works in Groningen. He studied liberal arts and painting at the Art Academy of Groningen, and graduated in 1982. Since then he has been active as a plastic artist and illustrator, and eventually also as a comics artist. He has contributed to small-press comic magazines since 1988, and is cooperator and editor of the Groningen comics magazine Gr'nn.

He has published regularly in Zone 5300 since 1998, and was also a contributor to Incognito, as well as the Incognito book collection (the books 'Nachtschade', 'Waanklanken' and 'De Zwarte IJscoman'). Sherpa published a section of his work in the 2006 book 'Nacht en Ontij', and Wielaert worked with Willy Linthout on the trilogy 'Het Laatste Station' for Standaard Uigeverij in Belgium. On 1 September 2011 an exposition of Wielaert's work opened in Galerie Lambiek, on display throughout the month.
