Nicolaas Wijnberg was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in 1918. In various fields, Wijnberg built up a large collection of work, from drawing and painting to murals and posters. Nicolaas Wijnberg was co-founder of the artists group De Realisten (The Realists). In the 1940s, he was co-founder of the Scapino Ballet, together with Hans Snoek and Hans van Norden. In his work, he pursued a recognizable depiction of life. In the 1960s and 1970s, Wijnberg also produced many theater sets for various theater groups. He also obtained numerous assignments for monumental murals, mosaics and stained glass windows. Nicolaas Wijnberg is famous for his drawings, illustrations, paintings, his rich imagination and the liveliness of his work. He died in the Rosa Spierhuis in June 2006.

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over
12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
