After his studies in Fine Arts in Besançon, Jean-Marie Woehrel made his first short stories for the magazines Tintin and Jet, such as 'La Saga d'Erik Randa' (script by Yves Duval), in which he first ventured into the world of Vikings. He also illustrated detective novels for Thriller magazine. In 1994, he participated in the collective album 'Un Jour de Soleil, un Jour de Lumière', and he illustrated a book on Scandinavian mythology. An amateur of ancient and medieval history, Woehrel he began working on the series 'Moi Svein, compagnon d'Hasting' with scriptwriter Eriamel at the publishing house Assor BD in 1999 (the first album of this series was drawn by Darvil).

Since 1999, Lambiek presents the Comiclopedia as a free service to comic fans from all over the world. The database has expanded to over
12,000 biographies of international comic artists, and also has an extensive Dutch section about comics in the Netherlands.
For 15 years, the site was funded from the resources of our Amsterdam-based shop. However, the current economical circumstances make it difficult for us to maintain this service. At the moment the Comiclopedia's sole editor works for us free of charge, aided by a couple of (international) volunteers.
